Beautiful Dooars attracted people for its pristine beauty for ages. Dooars i.e. the ‘door’ denotes the gateway to the plains from the Himalayan region, especially from Bhutan. There are 18 passages or gateways through which the Bhutanese people used to come down to the foothills of North Bengal. Sankosh River divided Dooars into two parts- Eastern and Western.
But the beauty of Dooars lies in its mountain valleys, mountainous streams, rich wildlife, and forest cover. It became a favorite among tourists for housing famous National Parks like the Buxa, the Jaldapara, and the Gorumara. By Air : Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport to Dooars as it is well-connected to many major cities in India. You can easily find a taxi to travel to several destinations of Dooars from here.
By Rail : Dhupguri railway station is located almost at the heart of the Dooars region. Several private vehicles are available from the station to reach various places of Dooars.
By Road : National Highway-34 goes through the Dooars region. Hence, destinations such as The Jaldapar National Park, Gorumara National Park, and Buxa Tiger Reserve are easily accessible by road.
Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is a spectacular work of nature popular among tourists for its magnificent beauty. A wide diversity of animals like elephants, gaurs, leopards, and a huge variety of reptiles and birds resides in the forest. The area is closed to visitors during the monsoon, from June to September.
Buxa is famous for sheltering some of the most celebrated animals in the world. Tigers, elephants, bison, sambar, barking hogs, wild boars, wild buffaloes, and leopards are some animals that can be found here. The old fort is another famous spot in this area.
Located on the banks of rivers Murti, the Gorumara National Park is a site that you cannot miss to afford on your next trip. The park is spread over an area of 80 sq. km. Gorumara houses a wide variety of animals including Asiatic one-horned rhinos, mammals, and birds, including the majestic Asian elephants, the royal Bengal tigers, and the Great Indian Hornbill.
Located at the foothills of the Himalayas in the Terai region, the Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary is spread across the lower catchment area of river Mahananda. With a thick forest cover, Mahanada is home to rare animals like one-horn rhinos, Bison, Elephants, Tigers, Leopards, Sambar, and Cheetahs.
Situated on the banks of the River Murti, Rocky Island is about 2 km from Samsing. The view of the river and surrounding forests are excellent from Rocky Island. This place is best suited for adventurous activities like trekking, rock climbing & rappelling.
Bindu is another paradise of the Dooars. It is famous for being the last hamlet of West Bengal, surrounded by the hills of Bhutan. This offbeat destination is blessed with the serene natural beauty of the Jaldhakariver. Bindu is also known for its hydel power project, one of the oldest in West Bengal.
Coochbehar is popular among tourists for its historical significance which is still evident here. The Royal Palace of Coochbehar and several historical places carry the heritage of the glorious Koch Dynasty that ruled the area for more than 400 years.
Jaldapara National is one of the verdant forests in Dooars. It is heaven for those who crave exclusive views of wildlife. This National Park is a treasure house of a Mosaic of woods, a perennial river, lush vegetation, and countless wild animals.
